External Partner Engagement with DVM Students

Partnering with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)

External partners play an important role in supporting the educational mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). We welcome collaboration with organizations that provide meaningful educational, professional development, and experiential learning opportunities for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students.

To ensure transparency, educational integrity, and equitable access for students, all engagements with external organizations must follow CVM guidelines and receive appropriate approval. See External Stakeholder Engagement with DVM Student Body Policy.

How to Engage with DVM Students

Expectations for Educational Programming

All presentations and activities should prioritize student learning and professional development.

Presentation materials may be requested as part of the approval process.

For virtual events, recordings must be provided to Academic and Student Affairs.

Product Demonstrations and Educational Wet Labs

External partners may participate in educational wet labs and product demonstrations when approved through ASA.

Examples include:

  • Medical device demonstrations
  • Clinical skill instruction
  • Nutrition education
  • Pharmaceutical education
  • Surgical technique training

Distribution of product samples, demonstration items, or educational materials may occur only during approved educational activities and under faculty oversight.

Any distribution plan must be reviewed and approved before the event.

Food, Gifts, and Promotional Items

External partners may provide refreshments for approved educational events, including:

  • Breakfast items
  • Lunch
  • Light dinners
  • Snacks

Gifts or prizes cannot be distributed by external stakeholders during University-sponsored, on-campus events, or events using University electronic platforms (e.g. Zoom). Prizes and gifts received at off-campus, non-University sponsored events do not require reporting. Per TMOG 8 "Payments to Students", low-value giveaways (e.g. pens, stickers) distributed to all attendees at a University event are generally exempt from this reporting requirement.

Student groups may not host "raffles," as Minnesota Gambling Control Board regulations require a permit for any event involving ticket sales. "Prize drawings" are permitted without a state permit, provided no money is exchanged and the event is off-campus and not University sponsored.

Communication Guidelines

To protect student privacy and ensure equitable communication practices:

  • Access to CVM email lists is restricted.
  • Messages intended for broad student distribution must be reviewed by CVM administration.
  • Educational, service-oriented, and event-related communications are generally eligible for review.
  • Promotional or marketing-focused communications may not be approved.

Certain approved feeding programs may have limited communication exceptions related to distribution logistics.

Before You Plan an Event

Please ensure that you:

  • Partner with a student organization

  • Submit required materials at least two weeks in advance

  • Obtain ASA approval before advertising or scheduling

  • Provide educationally focused content

  • Coordinate logistics with the hosting student organization

  • Follow all applicable CVM and University policies
